The farmhouse on Third Street sat near the river and had a separate garage. The property didn’t look like it had been landscaped in a few years, but the white house had been freshly painted and had a gorgeous porch. Cameron had a twinge of regret that he hadn’t found the place first.

Cam’s VW bus was parked near the garage, confirming that his son was there. Cameron ran up the steps and knocked on the door. After a few beats, he tried again. When no one answered, Cameron headed toward the garage, assuming Cam was in his apartment. But before he got to the stairs, he heard a murmur of voices coming from the rear of the house.

He switched gears, assuming Cam had help that day and was working on the back of the house. But as soon as he rounded the corner, he spotted Cam hugging Blake while she buried her head in his shoulder.

Feeling awkward and knowing he’d just walked in on a private moment, he retreated back around the house and then called out, “Cam? Are you back here?”

By the time he rounded the corner again, Cam and Blake had broken apart, but Cameron didn’t miss the way Cam was clutching Blake’s hand. Were they dating? Hadn’t they just met? If they were, that was fast. But then who was Cameron to talk? It wasn’t like it took very long for him and Wanda to fall into bed together. That thought brought a whole new set of worries when it came to the pair of teenagers. Please don’t let them be sleeping together already. That was something neither he nor Wanda needed to be worrying about.

“Hey, Cameron,” Cam said. “Were you looking for me?”

“Sure was.” He pasted on a smile and climbed up on the back deck. There was no mistaking the fact that Blake had been crying. He frowned as he studied her red, swollen eyes. “Are you okay, sweetheart?”

“I’m fine.” She sniffled and pulled her hand away from Cam’s to wipe at her eyes. It was then he noticed she was holding a stack of bills in her other hand. When she saw him eyeing the cash, she quickly stuffed it into her jeans pocket. “Just some allergies.”

Cameron was tactful enough to not point out that it wasn’t exactly allergy season yet. Clearly, she was upset and Cam had been comforting her. But it was also clear she wasn’t going to be sharing whatever it was that had made her upset. “Yeah. Allergies are the worst.”

He got to the point of his visit. “Cam, I actually came by to invite you to dinner with my parents. Mom is cooking. And trust me when I say you don’t want to miss that.”

Cam blinked a few times, clearly processing the invitation. Then he said, “I’d love to meet my grandparents, but…” He looked at Blake again and added, “Can we do it another time? We had plans to hang out tonight.”

“No! You should go,” Blake insisted. “Don’t worry about me.
